Define completion by the agreement

Compare completed work with the signed scope and approved changes, not with assumptions made during a sales conversation. Identify punch-list items, incomplete cleanup, missing selections or agreed accessories, and any performance concerns that can be observed without intrusive testing.

Collect closing documents

Depending on the project, request applicable inspection signoffs, manufacturer warranty information, workmanship terms, equipment manuals, permit records and payment documentation where appropriate. Confirm how any remaining items will be tracked and closed. Ask for a final statement reconciling the contract and changes. If a trade's work is concealed behind finishes, ask what inspection, photographs or product documentation was created before the area was closed. A visual walk-through after completion may not answer questions about concealed details.

Handle disagreements deliberately

Do not treat every cosmetic touch-up as an emergency or overlook a serious safety concern because a project looks finished. Discuss unresolved items in writing and follow the contract's notice and payment provisions. For contested amounts or lien concerns, seek legal advice before withholding or releasing disputed funds.
