Siding is the outer layer

Most siding systems shed much of the rain but are not the only defense against water. Behind the visible material, flashing, a water-resistive layer and drainage details help manage water that gets past joints. These layers must work at windows, doors, penetrations and roof intersections. A new exterior finish does not automatically repair a defective wall assembly.

Opening the wall creates a decision point

Removing siding may expose damaged sheathing, missing flashing or an older assembly that needs a specific approach. Record conditions before they are covered. The response depends on the extent and cause of damage; replacing a small visible area does not establish that all hidden moisture has been addressed. Older siding or coatings can require hazardous-material evaluation before disturbance.

Installation instructions are part of the system

Clearances, fasteners, joints and finishing requirements vary with the material. Blocking drainage holes or filling every gap with sealant can interfere with the intended water path. The replacement record should describe how openings and transitions are handled, not just the brand or color of siding. Save photos of concealed details for later maintenance.

Safety and limits

Do not remove unknown older siding or paint without checking hazardous-material concerns. Hidden decay and wall-system changes may require qualified evaluation and local approvals.
