Track visible siding issues without confusing a cosmetic defect with a wall-system problem.
Safety first
Do not remove unknown older siding or coatings. Suspected asbestos, lead paint or concealed decay needs appropriate evaluation. Never pressure-wash upward behind siding.
Checklist
Identify the siding material and locate care instructions.
From the ground, note loose panels, cracks, swollen edges and damaged trim.
Check visible window, door and wall penetrations for failed joints.
Look for splashback, vegetation touching walls and blocked drainage openings.
Record recurring staining or paint failure in the same location.
Compare interior damp spots with exterior conditions.
Clean a small test area using a method approved for the material.
Before replacement, ask how water-resistive layers, flashing and drainage will be handled.
Have persistent moisture, soft wall areas or suspect hazardous materials evaluated.
