Sheen affects appearance and care

Flatter finishes can make minor surface irregularities less apparent, while more reflective finishes often emphasize them. Washability varies by product and is not determined by sheen alone. Compare the exact paint's intended use and cleaning instructions. Lighting changes how a wall appears, so evaluate a sample under the room's daytime and evening conditions.

Prepare the actual surface

Dust, grease, loose coatings and poorly finished patches can interfere with adhesion or produce uneven appearance. New patches may need a suitable primer to control absorption. A water stain should be investigated before it is blocked or painted over. Product compatibility matters when changing from an older finish or applying paint to trim and cabinetry.

Plan for drying and occupancy

Follow ventilation, drying and curing guidance on the label and safety data sheet. Low-odor or low-emission descriptions do not mean ventilation is unnecessary. Keep people and pets away from wet materials and maintain safe access through the room. Allow the specified time before washing the finish or pressing objects against it.

Safety and limits

Do not sand unknown older coatings without considering lead hazards. Follow product precautions, and do not block exits or ventilation during preparation and drying.
