Why Exterior Paint Fails: Preparation, Moisture and Weather

Look below the coating

Peeling can involve moisture, contamination, an incompatible earlier finish or an unsuitable substrate. The pattern matters: failure beside a gutter or at board ends has a different context from widespread loss of adhesion. Photograph the condition and look for water sources before preparing the surface. New paint cannot strengthen decayed wood or correct an active leak.

Preparation is product-dependent

Sound existing coatings may need cleaning and appropriate surface preparation; failing coatings need a different approach. Primer choice depends on the substrate, stains and remaining finish. Unknown older paint may contain lead and should not be dry-sanded or heated casually. Preparation should follow a safe, compatible process rather than a universal instruction to scrape everything.

Application conditions affect the result

The label specifies acceptable temperature, moisture and recoat conditions. Surface temperature can differ from air temperature in direct sun, and dew or rain can interfere with drying. A coating that is dry to touch may not be ready for rain, cleaning or another coat. Keep the product information and application dates to help interpret later performance.

Safety and limits

Older coatings may require lead testing and lead-safe work. Avoid unsafe ladder use, and follow the product's protective-equipment and environmental instructions.
