Understand why flooring preparation involves more than removing the old finish.
Uneven, damaged or unsuitable substrates can affect the appearance and operation of new flooring. Required flatness, strength and preparation depend on the product and assembly. A soft spot or persistent squeak may deserve investigation rather than concealment. Distinguish a surface irregularity from a structural or moisture problem before choosing a preparation method.
Wood and concrete substrates have different measurement methods and acceptance criteria. A dry-looking surface is not a moisture test. Ambient humidity, acclimation and site conditions also affect some materials. Follow the flooring manufacturer's requirements and record results; a generic waiting period does not establish readiness for every product.
Expansion allowances, underlayment, fastening or adhesives must match the product. Floating and bonded systems behave differently. Door clearances, stair transitions and appliance access can change when finished height changes. Schedule protection and cleaning around installation so the new surface is not immediately damaged by unrelated work.
Do not remove suspect hazardous flooring or adhesive without assessment. Structural defects and active leaks should be resolved before new flooring is installed.
