Understand why posts, rails and boards can need different material ratings and care even when they share the same appearance.

Identify the component's exposure

A post in soil faces different conditions from a board held above the ground. Wood species, preservative treatment and product rating influence suitability. Treated wood is not automatically approved for every exposure, and color does not reliably identify its rating. Keep material labels or specifications rather than assuming every piece in a fence has the same protection.

Details influence moisture retention

Soil piled against rails, vegetation and irrigation can keep materials wet. Connections and cut ends may need specific treatment or detailing under the product instructions. A decorative cap does not make an entire post immune to moisture. Record where water collects and whether the fence's intended clearance or drainage has been changed by landscaping.

Care cannot restore lost strength

Compatible finishes may affect appearance and moisture exposure, but they do not repair decayed supports. Surface checking and discoloration need context; appearance alone cannot establish remaining strength. Avoid covering a questionable base with trim just to hide it. Keep repair and material records so future work can distinguish retained components from recently replaced ones.

Safety and limits

Do not infer load capacity from treatment labels or appearance. Cutting and handling treated materials requires appropriate precautions. Unstable posts and unknown older coatings should be evaluated before disturbance or reuse.
