Wood species, treatment and finish affect how a wood board behaves. Composite formulations, caps, profiles and colors also vary. Neither label alone establishes slip behavior, surface temperature or durability in a particular setting. Request the exact product instructions and consider the deck's exposure, nearby vegetation and expected use rather than relying on a broad material category.
Wood may need an appropriate protective finish and periodic checking for splits or loose fasteners. Composite still needs cleaning, and organic debris can support surface growth on many materials. Keep gaps and drainage paths clear as directed. Abrasive scrubbing, pressure washing, harsh chemicals or an incompatible coating can damage a product even when it appears heavily soiled.
Support spacing, fastening, end gaps and thermal movement are product-specific. Dark surfaces can become uncomfortable in direct sun; testing a sample at the intended location is more informative than a showroom comparison. If changing materials, verify compatibility with framing and stair details. Keep cleaning and warranty documents because their limits differ among products.
No material label guarantees a cool, slip-resistant or maintenance-free surface. Follow the specific product's installation and care instructions, and avoid disturbing structurally unsafe components.
