After Water Damage: The First 24 Hours in a Charlotte Home

By Patriot Home Service. Published: . Updated: . Published by Patriot Home Service.

A burst pipe or roof leak soaked a room. What to do in the first 24 hours: safety, stopping the water, photos and drying. From Patriot Home Service LLC.

Water in the house is stressful. A few steps in the first day can keep you safe and keep a record of what happened.

Safety first

If water is near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, stay out of the area and contact a licensed electrician or your utility. Do not walk through standing water where power may be on.

Stop the source

For a plumbing leak, shut off the water at the main valve. For a roof leak, catch drips with buckets and move belongings away. Do not climb on a wet roof.

Take photos and notes

Photograph the water, the damage and the source before you move things, and write down the time. Keep damaged items until you know whether anyone needs to see them.

Start drying

Move what you can out of the wet area. Open windows if the weather allows and run fans. Wet carpet pads, drywall and insulation can hold water longer than they appear to.

Call your insurer

If you plan to file a claim, contact your insurer. Your insurer decides any coverage. We are not an insurer, public adjuster or attorney.

Next step

Once the area has been dried, Patriot Home Service LLC can help with drywall and interior repairs.
