Interior wall & ceiling observation checklist
Document interior damage and its possible cause before patching or refinishing.
Safety first
Keep clear of sagging ceilings. Moisture near electrical equipment, rapidly changing cracks or unknown older textured finishes require qualified evaluation. Cosmetic patching does not establish structural safety.
Checklist
- Photograph cracks, stains and damaged areas with dates.
- Note whether damage changes after rain or plumbing use.
- Check for a known source of impact or vibration.
- Locate nearby outlets, fixtures and plumbing without opening the wall.
- Resolve leaks and verify drying before closing a cavity.
- Identify whether the wall or ceiling has a required fire-rated assembly.
- Check whether older coatings or texture need testing before disturbance.
- Match patch materials, fastening and finish to the existing assembly.
- Escalate recurring cracks, sagging or widespread moisture rather than repeatedly repainting.
