Rain, pollen, temperature changes and storms can affect a home's needs at different times. Set reminders to review drainage, visible exterior changes, filters and safety devices, then adjust based on conditions and equipment instructions. A monthly or seasonal reminder is useful only if the required manufacturer interval or actual problem is also considered.
From safe ground-level locations, check paths, accessible drains, exterior joints and visible loose components. Indoors, record unexplained moisture, unusual equipment behavior and changes around doors or windows. Compare the same viewpoints each time. Consistent observations make a developing issue easier to recognize than an occasional broad judgment that the house looks fine.
Store product instructions, repair records, permits and useful contacts together. Identify safely accessible shutoffs without operating unfamiliar equipment as a test. Check smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms using their instructions and replace devices according to their specified service life. Break a large maintenance list into manageable tasks and reserve hazardous work for appropriate personnel.
A routine checklist does not replace required inspections or professional evaluation of hazards. Do not climb onto roofs, disturb wiring or operate unfamiliar gas equipment during a walk-through.
