GAF Shingle Roofs: Reading Product Names on Your Estimate

By Patriot Home Service. Published: . Updated: . Published by Patriot Home Service.

Roof estimates list shingle, underlayment and accessory names. How to read the GAF product lines on a roofing estimate and what to ask about each one.

A roofing estimate often lists brand and product names line by line. If your estimate names GAF products, here is how to read it.

The shingle

The main line names the shingle product and color. Ask to see a sample of the color in daylight against your house.

What goes under the shingles

Look for underlayment, and for leak barrier at eaves, valleys and other vulnerable spots. If an item is not listed, ask whether it is included.

Edges and ridge

Starter strips at the eaves and rakes, hip and ridge caps, and drip edge are usually listed separately. Each one has a job at an edge of the roof.

Ventilation

Ridge vents or other vents should be named, with how they will be installed. Ventilation affects attic heat and moisture.

What an estimate does not tell you

Brand names do not describe workmanship. Ask how flashing at walls, chimneys and pipes will be handled, and who will be on site.
