Follow water from the roof to its discharge point while remaining on the ground.
Safety first
Do not climb ladders during rain or near power lines. Do not redirect water onto neighboring property, into sanitary drains or toward slopes without checking local requirements.
Checklist
During safe conditions, note where gutters overflow or leak.
Check visible gutter attachments and downspout joints from the ground.
Identify where each downspout discharges.
Look for pooling, erosion and splashback beside the foundation.
Keep accessible ground-level outlets free of leaves and debris.
Record wet areas after rain and how long water remains.
Locate buried utilities before any digging or drain installation.
Check easements and local stormwater rules before changing discharge.
Have persistent basement moisture, major settlement or buried drain failures evaluated.
