Check common water sources

Appliance connections, accessible supply lines, fixtures and exterior runoff all deserve periodic observation. Record visible corrosion, damp cabinets, slow drips and recurring stains without disturbing equipment. Some failures develop out of sight, so a symptom that returns after cleaning or painting should be investigated. Follow equipment-specific maintenance and replacement guidance rather than a generic schedule.

Use alerts as one layer

Water sensors can alert occupants to moisture in selected locations, but placement, power and connectivity affect what they detect. An automatic shutoff system has its own compatibility and maintenance requirements. Neither tool replaces a sound plumbing system or response plan. Test only according to the device instructions and understand what happens if an alert arrives while no one is home.

Prepare safe, useful information

Identify known, safely accessible shutoffs and keep instructions available. Do not operate unfamiliar gas or electrical equipment as a routine test. Save home records and important response contacts in a usable location. Review policy language for reporting requirements without assuming every cause of water damage is covered. Prevention includes exterior drainage and moisture management, not just indoor plumbing.

Safety and limits

Do not reach shutoffs through standing water or hazardous spaces. Plumbing, electrical and drainage changes need appropriate qualifications and local requirements.
