Covered Decks: Roof Tie-Ins, Drainage and Light

By Patriot Home Service. Published: . Updated: . Published by Patriot Home Service.

Adding a roof over a deck means planning how it joins the house, where rainwater goes and how much light reaches the rooms inside. What to discuss first.

A roof over a deck gives shade and lets you sit outside during a summer shower. It also adds a new roofline to the house, and that brings a few decisions.

How the roof meets the house

A deck cover can attach to the house wall or the existing roof, or stand on its own posts. Where it joins the house, flashing has to keep water out of the wall. Ask exactly how that joint will be built.

Where the rain goes

A new roof sheds water somewhere. Gutters and downspouts on the cover should send it away from the deck footings and the house foundation, not onto a walkway.

Light inside the house

A solid roof can make the room behind it darker. Some homeowners pick a lighter ceiling finish or add lighting under the cover.

Fans and lights

If you want a ceiling fan or lights, plan the wiring before the ceiling goes up. Wiring for fans and lights on covered decks is done by a licensed electrician.
